What can we learn from Sister Aroha's life?

Hello! In RE we have been learning about Sister Aroha, she is a catholic nun who left New Zealand to go to Sri Lanka so that she could take care of sick children in an orphanage.
For our task we had to make a DLO answering the question - what can we learn from Sister Aroha's life? I made a google drawing showing what we can learn from her life.

I enjoyed learning about her and the good things she did to help other people!

Here is my DLO!

What is an ecosystem?

Hello! Today was the first day of online learning since we are all in lockdown. We are learning about biodiversity, biodiversity is basically every living thing on this earth which are humans, animals, bacteria, plants and more. And for one for our understanding tasks we had to explain what an ecosystem was, if you don't know what an ecosystem is you can look at my canva!

I enjoyed learning about biodiversity and making this poster to explain what an ecosystem was! I didn't really find anything difficult.

Here is my poster!

Trip to Orana Park

Hello! Yesterday our classes room five and six went to Orana Park. When we first got there we meet two people called Bethany and Sarah, they were the ones who were going to show us around the zoo room five had Sarah and we had Bethany. After we had our morning tea it was time for us to go to our seperate classes and look at the animals!

We saw many different animals but the first animal we saw was the lions. Bethany told us interesting facts about lions, like how a lion's mane protects their neck when they're fighting and having a mane attracts the female lions.

The animals we saw were lions, tigers, reptiles, frogs, gorillas, farmyard animals (bunnies, pigs, chickens & more), kiwis, meerkats, otters, tasmanian devils, giraffes, lemurs, african wild dogs or painted dogs and cheetahs! It was very fun and we got to learn many facts about these animals. We even got to feed the giraffes and fish, but we weren't able to see all the animals because time ran out but that was okay!

Overall I enjoyed the trip and learning some new facts about the animals!

Here are some photos of the trip:

World Chocolate Day

Hello! Yesterday, the 7th of July was World Chocolate day or sometimes called International Chocolate Day, and because of it, we celebrated it at school by watching a movie called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory while drinking hot chocolate with marshmellows! It was delicious! We also learnt about the History of Chocolate from how it was before and how it came to be now, there were many interesting facts about it and I enjoyed learning about it! Here are some fun facts about the History of Chocolate - Back then, cocao was very expensive and only the rich could afford to drink chocolate. But also in France the royal family were the only ones able to drink it, up until the 1700s chocolate was just a drink but then in the 1830 the first chocolate bar was made. After we learnt about it we also did a follow up activity on it.

But anyways yesterday was a fun day, I enjoyed it because we got to watch a movie, drink hot chocolate, learn about the History of Chocolate and we even got to eat some chocolate as well!

W5T2 | Maths Strategy

Last week for maths I learnt how to do rounding and compensating which is an easy strategy to solve multiplication problems! So, for example if you want to figure out what 6 x 21 is then all you have to do is 6 x 20 ( rounding it to the nearest 10 ) which is 120 because 6 x 2 is 12 and then just add a zero to it which is 120! Then, 6 x 1 to add to 6 x 20 to make 6 x 21 which is 6 then add them together - 120 + 6 = 126! And there's your answer, 6 x 21 = 126! - (6 x 20) + (6 x 1)
                                                           120             6
                                                           120 + 6 = 126
                                                  and there's your answer!

It is a very easy and quick strategy to do, it is also very helpful when solving multiplication problems with big numbers. I enjoyed learning and using this strategy because it makes it easier to solve multiplication problems!

The Importance of Animals Used in War

For this week, we have been learning about ANZAC day - which includes the importance of animals used in war and learning about how people risk their lives for others. Since it is nearly ANZAC day, which is on Sunday 25 of April but the public holiday is on the 26, it is very important for us to know why we celebrate ANZAC day.

We have read different texts and watched many videos about it. For our task we had to either create a newspaper article about the importance of animals used in war or create a thinglink or a prezi describing what it is like living in the trenches. I have decided to make a newspaper article about the importance of animals used in war. For my newspaper article I have used websites from my own research.

This is my newspaper article!

Diary Entry

For this week, we have been learning more about Saint Bernadette since it's almost her feast day which is on April 16, but in Canada and in France her feast day is celebrated on February 18. Saint Bernadette was the girl who Mary appeared to in the grotto near Lourdes when she was only fourteen, Mary appeared to her eighteen times in total. If you wanna more then you should read my diary entry.

We have watched many videos about Mary appearing to Bernadette and we've also read some texts as well, so for our task we had to make either a diary/journal entry about any important event that happened to Bernadette, or either make a newspaper article about pretending you've interviewed Bernadette, and you've asked her what she had seen in the grotto. I decided to make a diary entry about Bernadette meeting Mary for the first time, but no one believed her.

This is my diary entry!

Easter Triduum

For R.E we have been learning about the Easter Triduum, the Easter Triduum is different events leading up to Jesus' death. There are many events like the last supper and more! For the create part we had to choose two images to draw relating to one of the Easter Triduum events. I decided to draw the bread and the wine from the last supper and the temple, we had to make a concertina, if you don't know what a concertina is, strips of folded paper so when you look at it in a certain angle or way then it will show one image but if you look the opposite way then it will show a different image.

This is my one!

So for our task we had to read through information that our teacher has given us about different things that different countries do for Christmas. Then we had to choose one of our own to research more about, I decided to research about Spain, because it seemed really interesting and all the different traditions they do. Then we had to make a DLO about all the information i've learnt. I did mine on canva!

Here is my DLO!

"Do to others as you would have them do to you."

For RE, our teacher read us a very long verse on loving your enemies - (insteading of getting revenge or  being mean to them back we should forgive them instead.) After she had read that we had to focus on one sentence/word which was "Do others as you would have them do to you." Which is the same thing as treating others the way you want to be treated. Then we had to make a DLO about the one sentence and explain how it would would relate to real life situations, I did mine on canva!

This is my DLO!

How to Convert Improper Fractions into a Whole Number

For the past weeks we have been learning about number knowledge. And using different types of tools for our learning and for maths we have to create a DLO about what we have learnt and what we want to teach other people! Our teacher has given us different types of tools for our learning to try out and use! I decided to use canva and it was really fun to do.

I enjoyed doing this and playing around with canva, I found explaining it a bit difficult cause I didn't really know what to say but overall I enjoyed doing this!

7 Sacraments

For RE we have been learning about the seven sacraments - and the sacraments of healing, initation and commitment. We had to watch and read about the different types of sacaraments which are; baptism, eucharist/holy communion, confirmation, anointing of the sick, marriage and holy orders! But all of them fit into different types of categories for example - marriage and holy orders fit into the sacaraments of commitment. So after we have learnt about the sacraments we had make a DLO on it, the first DLO we had to make was for the sacraments of initation and explain what they were, and then we had to make a DLO about the sacraments of healing and explain the grace that we get from it and then last but not least we had to explain the sacraments of commitment and what their responsiblites were but we had to make it on a newspaper article.

This is my slideshow about the - Sacraments of Initation!

This is my google drawing on the Sacraments of Healing!

This is my newspaper article on the Sacraments of Commitment - (Holy Orders & Marriage)

Colors in Te Reo Maori

Since it is Maori Language Week, for our reading activites we have to learn about the different songs, colors, numbers (and more) in Maori. We are also learning how to use different types of tools for our learning instead of using the boring stuff like a plain slideshow, google drawing and the others tools. I have choosen to do a slideshow but not just an normal and plain slideshow, it is a slideshow with links and other stuff like that to make it more fun and more unique aswell. I have also choose to teach you guys the different colors in Te Reo Maori!

Is was really fun to make the different links and stuff to it to make it more unique and not boring. I enjoyed designing it and putting the links it to go to another slide and animating some of it! I didn't find anything difficult I just got a bit confused.

This is my DLO!
What have you learnt?

Encylical

For RE we have been doing key ideas which helps us to know more about Jesus, popes, bishops and more! This is our second to last key idea and for this key idea we are learning about the Pope of our times which is Pope Francis. So first we had to watch a video about it and then we had to do a summary sheet which was like sumarising what was in the video, then we had to do a pope inquiry which was basically like asking questions about the topic we were doing I choose to do an Encylical that was Written By The Pope and from this I learnt a lot of information from this and found out what was a Encylical but I still can't pronouce it! But for this task we had to put in five pieces of information from our own research and then put it three questions including either; when or what, how or why, is, could or should. And then we had to answer the question again researching about it.

I kinda of found this task difficult finding all the information and asking questions about it and answering them but overall it worked out as fine! I enjoyed learning new things and finding out what a Encylical is!

This is my inquiry!

Koru and Kowhaiwhai

The Koru is sometimes used in Maori Art, as a symbol of life and nature. People also use the pattern for carving and tattooing. The Koru symbolizes new life, strength, growth and peace. The Koru is a meaning for that life changes but stays the same, some people also think that the Koru represents harmony.

The Kowhaiwhai is used to represent the history of Maori. And it's used to present the family tree of like someone's tribe. The Kowhaiwhai patterns paintings are used for meeting houses, storehouses and so much more. They also help to tell a story.
